Scholarship & Access
We are changing the narrative that Oxford is an “un-African” and inaccessible university by increasing access to African students to Oxford University through the Scholarship and Access team led by Nwangele Godwin Chukwuemeka, Toluwalase Awoyemi, Frank Njimbere, and Morategi Kale.
Because many worthy African students self-exclude themselves by not applying to their chosen programs at Oxford due to insufficient funding and the belief that Oxford is not attainable, the first step to improving access is breaking down these self-selection mechanisms. To this end, we run annual scholarship access programs for up to 100 prospective African applicants matched with current African Oxford students or alumni to provide support throughout the application and funding process.
Through this program, we waive the application fees of the most promising applicants. We also provide the applicants with information on scholarships opportunities to fund their studies at the University of Oxford. We also aim to increase the funding available to Africans at Oxford by partnering with the Africa Oxford Initiative to help facilitate new funding partnerships and attract new funding sources.
Mentorship Program for Prospective Students
Another layer of the scholarship access program is the more detailed mentorship program. It involves supporting prospective applicants by attaching them to Oxford-affiliated mentors to boost their chances of gaining admissions to the University. In this process, each student undergoes a three-month mentorship where the mentor, usually an Oxford student or alumni, supervises the assigned student and prepares them for admissions to the top-tier universities like Oxford.

Advice on research proposals and information on meeting potential supervisors,

Provision of indicative feedback on the entire application.
Our experience shows that this mentorship is essential for prospective students and new arrivals at Oxford. More ambitious students can partner with their mentors or other students to write papers and publish in high-impact journals to boost their research and analytical knowledge, placing them in an excellent position to excel at Oxford. The skills and knowledge transferred by the mentor to the mentees will come in handy when undergoing the academic rigors of Oxford University and will potentially give our mentees a level playing field to succeed in their programs.
What the Scheme does NOT offer: The mentorship program excludes the following;
